Cost and attainability of meeting stringent climate targets without overshoot

چکیده

Global emissions scenarios play a critical role in the assessment of strategies to mitigate climate change. The current scenarios, however, are criticized because they feature with pronounced overshoot global temperature goal, requiring long-term repair phase draw temperatures down again through net-negative emissions. Some impacts might not be reversible. Hence, we explore new set net-zero CO2 limited overshoot. We show that upfront investments needed near term for limiting but these would bring economic gains. Our study further identifies alternative configurations systems and roles different sectors regions balancing sources sinks. Even without emissions, removal is important accelerating near-term reductions providing an anthropogenic sink can offset residual hard abate.

Achieving stringent climate targets: An analysis of the role of transport and variable renewable energies using energy‐economy‐climate models

Anthropogenic climate change is threatening the welfare of mankind. Accordingly, policy makers have repeatedly stated the goal of slowing climate change and limiting the increase of global mean temperature to less than 2°C above pre‐industrial times (the so‐called “two degree target”). Stabilizing the temperature requires drastic reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to nearly zero. As t...

Insects Overshoot the Expected Upslope Shift Caused by Climate Warming

Along elevational gradients, climate warming may lead to an upslope shift of the lower and upper range margin of organisms. A recent meta-analysis concluded that these shifts are species specific and considerably differ among taxonomic lineages. We used the opportunity to compare upper range margins of five lineages (plants, beetles, flies, hymenoptera, and birds) between 1902-1904 and 2006-200...

Climate change: meeting the challenge.

The debate over global warming is over. That was the implicit message of a public letter that appeared in the journal Science on May 7, 2010, signed by 255 members of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, including Lonnie Thompson. The letter declared that ‘‘there is compelling, comprehensive, and consistent objective evidence that humans are changing the climate in ways that threaten o...

Meeting Concentration Targets in the Post-kyoto World: Does Kyoto Further a Least Cost Strategy?

Preliminary analysis based on an aggregate model of global carbon emissions suggests that constraining emissions to the levels that would be imposed by compliance with the results of the Kyoto negotiations can increase the discounted cost of ultimately limiting atmospheric concentrations. Kyoto targets can be either too restrictive or too permissive depending upon the (currently unknown) trajec...
